“Animals In Need Fund”
There aren’t many things in life as heart wrenching as an injured, unkempt and unwanted animal. One of the first places people look for help when they have found an animal in need is their veterinarian. Many of these animals require medical treatment and housing until they are healthy and their owners are found or they are adopted into a new home.
While many of the costs can be absorbed by veterinarians and staff members volunteering their time, appropriate medical treatment can become very expensive. The Good Samaritan who has rescued the pet may offer some financial support for the animal, however costs are rarely covered.
While San Luis Obispo Animal Services is very generous with the limited funds they have, only basic life-saving cost can be covered. To offset the costs of giving these animals a chance we have established our Animals in Need Fund.
The monies that are donated to our fund are credited to an account for homeless animals in need of care. These funds allow us to provide veterinary care to animals who don’t come to us with a caretaker.
How does the “Animals In Need Fund” work?
Moe, a Labrador who was hit by a car and brought in by Animal Services is a perfect example. Moe was unaltered and therefore roaming. When he was hit by a car, the femur, the largest bone in his back leg was fractured. Other than the fracture he only had a few scrapes. We made him comfortable while we waited for his owners. No one ever showed up. The fracture needed to be repaired surgically using costly stainless steel bone plates and screws. The surgery would take several hours of work by a surgeon who discounted his services. The other option was to euthanize Moe.
The “Animals In Need Fund” paid for the cost of medical and surgical procedures. The doctors and staff volunteered their time to care for Moe during his recovery. Moe now lives with a new family who love him dearly.
How are funds raised?
On August 2, 2008 we held our first annual Dog Walk and raised $1000! Often clients ask if they can make some kind of donation and the Animals in Need Fund is where the money goes. One of our clients has offered to hold a Rummage Sale in the fall to raise money for the Animals in Need Fund.
The generosity of our community is amazing and we are happy to help!
